The Army of the Potomac was created after the defeat of Union forces at the First Battle of Bull Run. Its objective was to defend Washington, D.C. by protecting the Potomac River entry into the city. Robert Charlton Mitchell was born in 1831 in Burlington, New Jersey. During the Civil War, he served as an officer in the 51st Regiment, New York State Volunteers and the 7th Regiment, National Guard of New York State. In 1865 he married Alexina Gaff.
